A good while ago, having returned home from a night out in Sheffield, my wife and her sister sat down and proceeded to fix the world in Spanish. They were talking so fast that I could not follow the conversation - think of the staccato of a sub machine gun! I took the only sensible course of action open to me and went to bed. Some time later my sister-in-law remarked: “ya se fue a dormir el viejito?” (Which means “has the Ol’man gone to bed already?”)

From that night on, I have been known as “viejito”, or “Ol’man” for those of you who only speak the King’s mother tongue, English! And because I’ve always been accused of talking too much, I figured I might as well ramble on about stuff I feel passionate about. Who knows? A tiny nugget of wisdom might even make the whole thing somewhat useful, if not simply bearable!

I won’t kid myself though, for the whole world is brimming with podcasts of one genre or another: some great, some good, and many more indifferent. Which begs the question, as to why anyone would want to listen to me rambling on, particularly given that nothing will be scripted, or structured in anyway, or edited. Because in real life shit happens, usually just in time to torpedo one’s best laid plans…

After all I’m not famous, I’m not an academic, a visionary or major activist, nor am I a billionaire ready to impart tantalizing tips on how to make filthy lucre in double quick time.

But having reached the autumn of my years, I can tell you that I have trodden that path you’re stepping on, I have walked that road and taken many a wrong turn, I have climbed that hill as it became a mountain. As for mistakes, you name them, and I have made them, and then some.

Are you still here?
